Drink-X Benrinnes 12 Year Old: A Straightforward Speyside Dram

Tasted the Drink-X Benrinnes 12 – a Speyside single malt with clean fruit, soft malt character, and gentle spice. Modest, but honestly enjoyable.

Introduction

I recently had the chance to sit down with a bottle of the Benrinnes 12 Year Old released by Drink-X. I’d never tried anything from Drink-X before, and this one caught my attention because it's a single malt from a distillery that often gets overlooked outside of blends. Benrinnes doesn’t always pop up as a stand-alone expression, so I was curious to see how it would perform over a full tasting – no heavy branding, no frills, just the whisky.

Nose

From the first pour, it offers a fairly straightforward nose. Mild orchard fruits – mostly pears and barely-ripe apples – sit alongside a clean malt backbone. There’s a straw-like dryness to it, reminiscent of drying summer grass, and a faint touch of vanilla cream. The oak influence is subtle, suggesting bourbon cask maturation without additional finish. It's not a very layered aroma, but it’s clean and inoffensive.

Palate

The palate follows up on those early impressions – light to medium in body, with gentle fruit and soft cereal notes. The sweetness is restrained; a bit of honey and some toasted biscuit come through. Underneath, there’s a mild herbal bitterness – not distracting, but it's there. Oak spice arrives mid-palate, adding some grip, along with a slight nuttiness that reminds me of blanched almonds. I didn’t detect any sulphur or off-putting notes – it's clean whisky, simply put.

Finish

The finish is short to medium in length, gently drying with a pleasant peppery spice tailing off. It leaves some of that malt sweetness lingering on the sides of the tongue, but nothing too persistent. It fades politely without asking for much more attention.

Price and Value

This bottle sits comfortably in the affordable bracket, and for an undistorted taste of what Benrinnes has to offer, it does a fair job. It may not deliver surprises or big complexity, but it doesn’t pretend to. If you’re looking for a solid Speyside malt for casual sipping or even for building up your palate, this fits the bill at its price.

Background

Benrinnes is a Speyside distillery known more for its blending stock than single malt releases. Its spirit is often meaty and earthy, especially when sherry casked, but this expression takes a cleaner route. The Drink-X bottling houses the whisky for 12 years, presumably in ex-bourbon barrels, judging by the flavour and coloration. Bottled at 46%, it retains some natural weight without chill-filtration, which I always appreciate. Final Notes

Would I buy this bottle again? Possibly, though I think I’d be more likely to recommend it to someone newer to whisky or looking for a clean, everyday sipper. It’s not the kind of dram that dominates attention, but sometimes that’s the appeal. Is it good for newcomers? Definitely – it’s well-structured, mild in profile, and easy to enjoy without needing prior experience. What kind of moment suits this one? I’d say it’s perfect as a quiet evening pour – one to end the day with, rather than pore over. Compared to other Speyside malts at this age, such as Glenlivet or Macallan, this Benrinnes is drier and a little less polished, but that’s part of its charm – it feels honest.
