Introduction This bottle caught my attention for a few reasons: it’s a 20-year-old Springbank, and it’s matured entirely in Oloroso sherry casks. Those two factors alone promised something rich and complex, and my curiosity got the better of me. I’ve had several younger Springbanks with sherry influence, but a full two decades in a single cask type piqued my interest. I was expecting depth, some signature Springbank muscle, but hopefully with a mellow refinement after all those years in wood. Nose Right from the start, this whisky opens with a dense, earthy aroma. The sherry cask makes its presence known with polished wood, dried figs, and worn leather. There’s a touch of varnish at first, but it settles quickly to reveal richer, darker notes—think toasted walnuts, pipe tobacco, and damp forest floor. Under that is the familiar Springbank character: oily, mineral-driven, and faintly coastal. It’s not loud, but it’s persistent. Over time, a little fruitcake sweetness and cinnamon creep in, softening an otherwise brooding nose. Palate On the palate, this whisky carries real weight. There’s a chewy intensity to it, with dark fruit and burnt sugar at the forefront. Prunes and old raisins intertwine with black pepper and clove, followed by espresso and a touch of flint. It’s dry overall, not cloying or overly sweet. The oak is present but not dominant—it brings balance rather than bitterness. The ABV (bottled at cask strength) doesn’t overwhelm, though a few drops of water help tease out a bit more fruit and loosen the structure just a little. You’re still left with a distinctly Campbeltown core: earthy, slightly funky, and firmly structured. Finish The finish is long, resilient and gradually evolves from leathery dryness to a gentle salinity. There’s a warmth that lingers, not from alcohol heat but from a deep spice—nutmeg and dry ginger, mostly. The old sherry casks leave a dusty cocoa bitterness right at the end, making for a contemplative end to each sip. It leaves the palate dry, encouraging another taste. Price and Value Bottles like this don’t come cheap and with only 253 bottles produced, it’s clear this was never going to be a widely available dram. But when comparing it to other similarly aged Springbanks or sherry-matured Scotch of this complexity, it doesn’t feel unreasonably priced. The quality of the cask and the full maturation in Oloroso wood bring a serious level of character. If you appreciate well-aged, sherried whisky that doesn’t rely on sweetness to carry itself, this feels like money spent well. Background This 20-year-old Campbeltown single malt comes from Springbank Distillery, one of the few remaining producers in the region. They’re known for their traditional, hands-on approach—floor malting their own barley, direct firing their stills, and bottling without chill filtration or added colour. This particular release is part of the "Awakening Series" from Best Dram and matured entirely in an ex-Oloroso sherry butt before being bottled at natural cask strength. The whisky was distilled in 2002 and bottled in 2022, with the cask offering a rich view of what long-term sherry maturation can look like at Springbank. Final Notes Would I pick up this bottle again? If availability or price weren't barriers, absolutely. There's a specific kind of depth here that's not easy to find, even among other sherried single malts. For newcomers, I’d say this isn’t an ideal starting point—it’s complex and takes some patience, both on the nose and palate. It fits best in a quiet moment, probably after a meal, when you want to sit with a dram and spend time working through the layers. Comparing it to other Springbank expressions—particularly younger or bourbon-matured ones—you really feel how much the sherry wood has shaped this whisky over two decades. Those familiar Springbank traits are still there, but they’re tightly woven into something slower and darker. If you’re already fond of the distillery and looking for something with a bit more age and depth, this one stands up well.
